Even as we strive to open the minds of our orphans to the broader world, we try to do the same for Americans. So each Fall, Tinashe Basa, our director, and Dennis Gaboury, our founder, visit churches, synagogues, arts groups, civil organizations and schools. We introduce Americans to Zimbabwe, its culture and our children, and, upon request, follow up with a Skype video conference so everyone can meet “in person” and ask questions. Each visit is tailored to the needs of the organization we visit.
This far, they’ve traveled across the United States, from Fairbanks, Alaska to Cincinnati, Ohio, and from New York to Dallas. Tinashe has shared Zimkids’ story at a Ted Youth Weekend in Boston, on television in Fairbanks, and at his first meeting with the amazing Texas gogos who have made our sewing project possible.
We’ve spoken at private parties, and in 2013, we brought a delegation of Zimbabweans to join hands with Americans active in the international struggle against the ravages of AIDS at AIDS Walk Washington D.C.
We also bring along dolls and wire toys the orphans make for their own play – and as a THANK YOU to donors. Each comes with photograph and mini-biography of the toymakers.
